Kardamaina, is a small town 7 km from Kos Airport, situated mid-way along the south coast of the island. Once a small fishing village, it is now a popular summer destination, especially for British tourists, offering pubs, restaurants, bars and night clubs. Kardamaina is built on the site of the ancient Alasarna settlement. During the 2nd century BC, Alasarna was an important urban center. Impressive ruins have been excavated, such as a temple of Apollo, an extensive Early Christian settlement (from the few known in Greece), and four basilicas.

Next stop is Gyali, which means glass in Greek, a volcanic island located halfway between Kardamaina and Nisyros. It consists of rhyolitic obsidian lava domes and pumice deposits. The island has two distinct segments, with the northeastern part almost entirely made of obsidian and the southwestern part of pumice. Take the chance to swim in the tropical crystal green water and observe the biggest pumice quarry in the world.
